“REDROOMS” (RR)

Just so you know, the title of this blog post is NOT referring to the book or film, THE SHINING. It is actually referring to the “redroom” (RR) of the Birmingham Museum of Art I recently visited and the spiritual and soulful relevance of that room to the “redrooms” (RR) of Ingmar Bergman’s CRIES AND WHISPERS (1972).

It wasn’t just the other “R,” i.e., the RAT sculpture I encountered at the Birmingham Museum of Art recently (https://timothyjverret.blog/2021/04/25/you-drove-6-hours-for-a-rat/), that intrigued me. I had made my way from the museum’s garden, after spending time in prayer with my little rat friend, and walked into the “Renaissance Room” (RR) of the museum. This is what I encountered in my physical realm:

When I had physically walked into the “Renaissance Room” (RR) and saw the haunting beauty of the art masterpieces in that “redroom” (RR), this is what I encountered in my spiritual realm:

I did not know when I physically entered the “Renaissance Room” (RR) of the museum that I would spiritually enter into the “redroom” (RR) of Bergman’s masterpiece, CRIES AND WHISPERS. What I do know for me is that the “redroom” (RR) of the museum IS the “redroom” (RR) of CRIES OF WHISPERS. BOTH “redrooms” allowed me physical entrance into my spiritual soul. I could go on and on about what a masterpiece Bergman’s film, CRIES AND WHISPERS, is (and, trust me, it REALLY is!) and how Bergman filmed this entire film in red for a glimpse and grueling “grip of a trip” into the body and the soul of the 4 female characters. And I could go on and on about another masterpiece (actually, many masterpieces) that I encountered in the “Renaissance Room” (RR) of the museum. What I will go on and on about is that BOTH “redrooms” (RR) are my exterior (my physical) for the “grip of a trip” into my interior (my spiritual). If my soul were an image, it would be BOTH “redrooms” (RR). It would be the RR for the R&R of my soul. It would be about how I am humbled and haunted by BOTH “redrooms” and forever will be.

I really hope you spend all the time necessary (take all the time you want) to view each picture contained in this blog post. Just put all my words aside for a very long while (did I just say you can put all my words aside?….haha!) and spend time going R by R, frame by frame, picture by picture, soul by soul. I think you will make connections, maybe even make assumptions (and that’s okay, by the way), but more than anything you will make a “grip of a trip” into the RR of your own soul.

If you would be so kind as to inform me about your RR “grip of a trip,” I promise not to “trip you up” with too many of my own words about your own RR trip. You along must make and take that RR trip….I can’t make and take it for you, try as I might. 😪

“A picture is worth a thousand words.” I’ll say! And maybe a thousand souls, too 😉

Love, blessings, and happy “grip of a trip” into the RR of your own soul,

Timothy J. Verret

PS: Did you notice how this blog post is set against a red backdrop? I’m just saying….🙄

  1. You make such a succinct connection and write about the soul entrance into the REDROOMS with your usual simplicity and beauty. The pictures from BIRMINGHAM MUSEUM OF ART are truly spiritually bountiful. As for Bergman’s CRIES AND WHISPERS, having watched it and being haunted by its red motif, I can say it truly lets us grip the crimson bounty of the soul. So I completely agree with you.

Keep writing these gems. You are indeed prolific and endearing as a writer to me, my friend.

  2. Thank you, PJ. You are prolific and endearing as a writer to me, too, “huckleberry friend.” I didn’t think it was possible for Bergman’s CRIES AND WHISPERS to become more alive for me, but it took walking into the “Renaissance Room” of the Birmingham Museum of Art for the film to become even more alive for me. And to give me the message that, yes, indeed, is the exterior and the external (physical/flesh) fleeting, vanishing right before our very own eyes. What is NOT fleeting, vanishing right before our very own eyes, is the interior and the internal (spiritual/soul). The internal IS eternal!!!! God always knew this. It took me to “grip a trip” to the external to see this eternal internal!!!!

    Love and blessings, “huckleberry friend,”
    Timothy (Mr. T)
